Prof. Dr. Klaus Echtle retired since 01 March 2019.

Klaus Echtle studied Computer Science at University of Karlsruhe and received his diploma in 1979. From 1980 he worked as a research assistant in the group of Prof. Dr. Görke at the University of Karlsruhe. He passed his PhD examination in 1985 and his habilitation in 1989. After a temporary professorship at University of Frankfurt/Main from 1989 to 1990, he became permanent professor at University of Dortmund. Since October 1995, Klaus Echtle is professor of Practical Computer Science at University of Essen. From 2000 to 2002 he held the position of a Vice President of University of Essen.

His field of work covers "Practical Computer Science", and "Fault Tolerance" in particular. His research is dealing with reliability problems of computing systems and the development of respective countermeasures. Fault tolerance protocols are designed and evaluated for distributed systems and control systems for safety-critical applications. "Dependability of Computing Systems", headed by Klaus Echtle, focus on fault tolerance issues in distributed systems, computer networks, operating systems, real-time systems and automation systems. The work includes the design of efficient solutions as well as its analysis by both modeling and injection of artificially generated faults into existing systems.

When not being busy with problems of fault tolerance he likes hiking in the mountains.
